NAGESHWARI, KURIGRAM, Oct 31: All 24 students who sat for this year’s HSC examinations at three non-MPO-listed colleges in Nageshwari Upazila of district, failed, highlighting a crisis in under-resourced educational institutions.
The colleges are Nageshwari Model College, Kuti Poyradanga School and College, and Chilakhana Model College. They had 15, five and four examinees, respectively, and none passed.
According to the Dinajpur Education Board, 49 institutions across its eight-district jurisdiction recorded a zero pass rate. Kurigram accounted for the highest number, with nine such institutions, including the three in Nageshwari.
Education observers attributed the poor results to a lack of government MPO funding, inadequate infrastructure and teacher shortages. Unpaid teachers struggle to maintain instruction, while poor facilities and irregular student attendance further undermine academic performance.
Shamsul Alam, principal of Kuti Poyradanga School and College, said its college section had yet to receive MPO approval and had no dedicated college-level teachers. Classes are conducted by teachers from the school section, while students frequently remain absent.
Dinajpur Education Board Chairman Professor Ilyas Ahmed said the board would issue show-cause notices to institutions with zero pass rates, summon their heads to explain the results and conduct inspections before taking appropriate action.
