Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Md Delawar Hossain has demanded the resignation of the Election Commission (EC), alleging widespread irregularities and vote rigging in the by-election to the Thakurgaon-1 constituency.

He said the election had once again proved that free and fair polls were not possible under a partisan government. He also alleged attacks on homes, vandalism and assaults on election agents and party workers during the voting.

Delawar made the remarks at a brief rally following a protest procession organised by the Thakurgaon district unit of Jamaat-e-Islami on Saturday (October 31) afternoon.

The procession began from the town's bus stand area, passed through the main roads and Chowrasta intersection, and ended at the bus stand.

Addressing the rally, Delawar said the Election Commission had failed to deliver a fair election in line with public expectations. He said reports of election fraud had been published in print and electronic media.

Alongside demanding the resignation of the commission, he called for legal action against presiding and assistant presiding officers.

He further alleged that people's voting rights had been taken away and the results had been forcibly manipulated, describing the election as a dark chapter for the country's democracy.

He also demanded that those involved in electoral irregularities and violence be identified, brought to justice and given strict punishment.

Thakurgaon district Jamaat Ameer Principal Belal Uddin Pradhan, General Secretary Md Alomgir and leaders, activists and supporters of the party were present at the rally.

In the by-election held on October 29, BNP candidate Mirza Faisal Amin was unofficially elected with 227,917 votes, contesting with the sheaf of paddy symbol.

His nearest rival, Jamaat candidate Delawar Hossain, who contested under the 11-party alliance, received 96,513 votes.
