Residents of Babupur village in Delduar upazila of Tangail have successfully secured a permanent playground for their children and youth after purchasing 60 decimals of land through collective crowdfunding.
Home to over 3,500 people across more than 700 families, Babupur previously lacked any dedicated recreational space. In the absence of a field, local children were forced to play in paddy fields or courtyards—activities that routinely halted during harvest seasons—while parents grew increasingly concerned over rising smartphone and online gaming addiction among the youth.
To combat this, local elders and youth spearheaded an initiative to acquire land. Contributions poured in from all segments of the community, ranging from Tk 200 to Tk 1 lakh per household, successfully raising enough funds to purchase the 60-decimal plot. The milestone was celebrated with a festive procession featuring musical instruments and flower garlands.
Local youth expressed overwhelming joy at finally having a proper space for afternoon sports, noting that they had long given up hope of ever having a village field.
Following the initiative, local officials visited the site to inspect the grounds. Delduar Upazila Youth Development Officer Md. Jahangir Alam praised the community-led effort as a wonderful initiative. Meanwhile, Md. Nazim Uddin, sub-assistant engineer of the National Sports Council's planning and development wing, stated that he would submit an assessment report to explore whether additional land could be integrated through administrative channels should higher authorities grant approval.
Villagers now hope that the new field will serve as a thriving hub for youth sports and nurture future athletes.
