A Fire Service vehicle came under attack while responding to a fire beneath the Mirpur-11 Metro Rail station in the capital. During the incident, the vehicle’s front windshield and side-view mirrors were shattered by thrown bricks and stones, injuring the driver due to the broken glass.
The incident occurred on Sunday (November 1) afternoon, as confirmed by Anwarul Islam Dolon, an official from the Fire Service’s media cell.
According to the Fire Service, two units were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a fire beneath the Mirpur-11 Metro Rail station. But when the Fire Service vehicles arrived, they were immediately targeted by protesters.
Anwarul Islam Dolon stated that two Fire Service units were sent to the location following reports of the fire. As the vehicles arrived, protesters already present at the site launched a sudden attack, throwing bricks and stones at the lead vehicle and damaging it.
He added that the attack shattered the vehicle’s front windshield and side-view mirrors. The driver suffered cuts from the broken glass, which resulted in bleeding.
It should be noted that since Sunday morning, garment workers have been protesting in various areas of the capital, including Mirpur-10, 11, and 12, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk. 30,000. The situation escalated by the afternoon, during which a police vehicle was also set on fire. It was amidst this unrest that the Fire Service vehicle was attacked while en route to contain the blaze.
