MP Nazrul denied bail again in second wife’s suicide case

A Dhaka court on Sunday rejected the bail petition of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam in a case filed over the alleged abetment of his second wife Mariam Akter’s suicide.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir passed the order on November 1 after hearing arguments from both sides.
Defence lawyers, including Mahbubur Rahman and Mizanur Rahman, sought bail, claiming that Nazrul was innocent and had no involvement in the incident. They also cited his age of 75, complicated heart disease and permanent residence, arguing that he would neither abscond nor leave the country if released on bail. The defence further pointed out that his first wife, Maksuda Islam, had been granted bail on September 30.
The prosecution opposed the petition, and the court rejected it after hearing both sides.
Mariam’s body was recovered hanging from a flat at the NAM apartment complex opposite the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on the evening of September 20. Police subsequently took MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife into custody.
That night, Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, filed a case accusing Nazrul, his first wife Maksuda Islam and the victim’s uncle, Obaidur Rahman, of abetting her suicide.
The following day, a court granted four days remand for Nazrul and one day for Maksuda on a police petition. Later that night, the investigation was transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) of police.
On September 23, Obaidur Rahman, who had been arrested in connection with the case, was sent to jail.
