177 factories shut amid labour unrest in Savar-Ashulia

Authorities have declared holidays at 177 garment factories in the Savar and Ashulia industrial belts amid ongoing labour unrest over demands for a minimum wage and other benefits, while workers blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway at Hemayetpur on Sunday.

Superintendent of Police of Ashulia Industrial Police-1 Md Muminul Islam Bhuiyan said workers had been protesting since the morning, prompting authorities at 177 garment factories in Savar and Ashulia to declare holidays for the day.

Meanwhile, workers from several factories blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway at Hemayetpur in the afternoon, disrupting traffic on the route.

The industrial police official said police were working to bring the overall situation under control.
