At least 746 people were killed and 46,351 injured in 4,280 incidents of political violence in Bangladesh over 13 years and eight months, according to a report by Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB).

The findings were presented at an event at TIB's Dhanmondi office in Dhaka on Sunday to release the results of a study titled Institutional Good Governance in Political Parties in Bangladesh.

The study reviewed incidents of political violence from January 2013 to August 2026, drawing on information from human rights organisations and reports published in newspapers.

According to the report, 46 people were killed and 3,059 injured in political violence during the first eight months of 2026. The incidents involved clashes between political parties as well as internal disputes within the parties.

From January 2013 to August 2026, 428 people were killed and 27,860 injured in 428 incidents of clashes between political parties. Meanwhile, 318 people were killed and 18,491 injured in 1,926 incidents of internal party conflicts and clashes.

The report identified the involvement of leaders and activists of the Awami League and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the violence, alongside members of Jamaat-e-Islami, the Jatiya Party and the National Citizen Party (NCP).

It said the exercise of power, attempts to exert influence and a lack of internal accountability within political parties were increasing the risk of violence. The misuse of power by influential political parties was also spreading within their organisational structures, it added.

Speaking at the event, TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said political parties lacked accountability and good governance, while the abuse of power was spreading within influential parties.

He said the way political parties exercised power was contributing to rising political violence. Without institutional accountability within the parties, it would be difficult to control internal power abuse and violent tendencies, he added.
