CUET students announce academic shutdown over VC’s delegated duties

Observer Online Report

Students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) have announced a day-long academic shutdown for Monday (November 2), protesting the decision to assign another person the routine duties of the vice-chancellor.

Under the programme, students will boycott all classes, examinations and administrative activities conducted under the delegated routine responsibilities. They announced the shutdown in an emergency statement on Sunday evening.

In the statement, the students said they had returned to classes and examinations after a prolonged movement and deadlock, considering their academic future and the university's learning environment. However, they had maintained that they did not accept the newly appointed vice-chancellor and would not allow him to interfere in the campus's normal activities.

The students alleged that the administration had disregarded their previously announced position by assigning another person the vice-chancellor's routine duties. They rejected what they described as an attempt to establish authority on campus through another person in the VC's absence.

They warned that the decision could destabilise the campus again and said the administration would be responsible for any renewed deadlock. They also threatened further peaceful but stricter programmes if their conditions were violated or administrative interference continued.

The students reiterated that their sole demand was the reinstatement of former vice-chancellor Professor Dr Abu Sadaat Mohammad Sayem.
