Amid persistent readymade garment (RMG) worker protests over wage hikes, management authorities in Gazipur declared a general holiday across 150 additional factories on Monday, November 2.
This follows a similar holiday declared in 100 factories on Sunday, November 1, bringing the total number of shut factory units across the industrial district to 250.
Gazipur Industrial Police Superintendent Amjad Hossain confirmed that the respective factory management announced the fresh closures around 10:30 AM on Monday due to security concerns and ongoing disruptions.
Industrial Operations Halted Amid Highway Blockades
For the past several days, labor discontent has flared across various industrial units in Gazipur, with workers demanding an increase in minimum wages.
Protesting workers blockaded strategic points along the Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways, disrupting regular production activities and halting traffic.
To regain control of the volatile situation, authorities have deployed 10 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) operating alongside 21 Executive Magistrates.
Law enforcement agencies and security forces maintain a heavy presence throughout the industrial belt to restore order and ensure the protection of industrial property.
