BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced on Monday (November 2), that district and upazila level leaders will select candidates for upcoming local government elections through internal discussions, prioritizing local popularity and winnability.

Speaking at an exchange of views with journalists at a hotel in Sylhet, Rizvi stated that party nomination procedures will gather momentum once the Election Commission officially announces the schedule and deadlines for submitting nomination papers.

Present at the meeting were BNP Standing Committee Member Prof. Dr. Forhad Halim Donor, Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Qaiyum Chowdhury, BNP Central Executive Committee Assistant Organizing Secretary Mifta Siddiqui, and Members of Parliament Advocate Emran Ahmad Chowdhury and Abdul Malik Chowdhury, among others.

Defeated Forces Instigating Labor Unrest, Sabotage

Addressing the escalating readymade garment (RMG) worker protests, the BNP leader asserted that both domestic and foreign defeated forces are fueling instability to derail the government.

"Fascist remnants are providing provocation from a neighboring country, while certain domestic political elements are spreading propaganda," Rizvi said. He pointed out that 11 activists from the banned Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League were arrested on Sunday from protest sites in Mirpur, while a Jagannath University Chhatra League leader publicly admitted their involvement on social media.

Rizvi emphasized that the government, which assumed office following the February 12 national elections under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is working to strengthen democratic foundations while taking a zero-tolerance stance against extortion, land-grabbing, and lawlessness.

Slamming Jamat Chief's 'Revolution' Call & Energy Management

Rizvi sharply criticized recent comments by the Jamaat-e-Islami Amir regarding "another revolution knocking at the door," questioning the rationale behind such statements just eight months after a democratically elected government took office. He urged political leaders to act responsibly instead of provoking the public through long marches when issues can be resolved in Parliament.

Rizvi also highlighted the government's proactive measures to tackle external economic shocks, noting that the ongoing Iran-US war and shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have threatened national energy supplies.

He informed that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has already initiated alternate energy import channels to maintain stable gas and electricity supplies for industrial factories and households across the country.
