Diamond World Managing Director Dilip Kumar Agarwala has been shown arrested in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over allegedly acquiring illegal assets worth Tk 112.47 crore and conducting suspicious transactions exceeding Tk 755 crore.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Shahjahan Kabir passed the order on Monday (November 2) following a petition filed by the ACC investigation officer.
Agarwala was produced before the court during the hearing and subsequently sent to jail.
According to the ACC petition, Agarwala allegedly acquired and possessed assets worth Tk 112.47 crore beyond his known sources of income. He also allegedly conducted transactions totalling Tk 755.30 crore through 34 bank accounts, involving deposits of Tk 385.32 crore and withdrawals of Tk 369.97 crore. The ACC suspects that the transactions involved layering of money through transfers, conversions and concealment.
The ACC investigation officer, Assistant Director Sajjad Hossain, filed the application on October 25, arguing that Agarwala's arrest was necessary for a proper investigation.
Agarwala was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from the capital's Banani area on October 19. The following day, a court placed him on one-day remand in a case involving alleged gold and diamond smuggling and money laundering.
On October 21, he was also shown arrested in an attempted murder case filed over the killing of Abdul Jabbar and subsequently placed on remand for a total of six days in two phases. He has remained in custody since then.
Earlier, on September 3, 2024, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Agarwala over allegations of gold and diamond smuggling, fraud, forgery and money laundering. He was subsequently implicated in several other cases, including the murder of teenager Hridoy Ahmed in Badda during the quota reform movement.
He was later released from jail after securing bail from lower and higher courts in the cases.
Agarwala contested the 12th parliamentary election as an independent candidate from the Chuadanga-1 constituency. He was also a member of the then Awami League's central subcommittee on industry and commerce.
