At least 264 garment factories in Savar and Ashulia declared a general holiday on Monday following clashes between workers and police during protests demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000.
Superintendent of Police of Industrial Police-1 Mominul Islam Bhuiyan confirmed the development to Dhaka Post on Monday afternoon. Clashes and chases between workers and police were reported at several locations in Savar and Ashulia from the morning.
For the third consecutive day, garment workers took to the streets demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000, an end to blacklisting and a halt to worker layoffs.
In the morning, workers blocked the Nabinagar-Chandra highway in the Baraipara area to press for their three-point demands, including a wage increase. Police from Ashulia Police Station later persuaded them to leave the road.
Meanwhile, workers at New Age Garments in the Nischintapur area entered the factory premises and staged a work stoppage. They later gathered in front of Ananta Garments on the Baipail-Abdullahpur road.
Several factories, including Knit Asia, Al-Muslim, Trouser Line and Ananta Garments, also declared a general holiday on Monday, as they had done the previous day. Police intervened when workers gathered on the road.
The situation escalated after workers allegedly threw bricks and stones at police, triggering chases and clashes. Police fired tear gas to disperse the protesting workers.
Agitated workers also set fire to a covered van in the Narsinghpur area, further heightening tensions in the industrial zone.
According to police, brick-throwing and clashes were reported in front of several factories, including Picard Bangladesh Ltd, Artistic Design, Janron Sweater Ltd, Ferrari Garments Ltd, Denitex Ltd, Anlima Textile Ltd, Al Islam Textile Ltd and GQ Industries.
Police attempted to bring the situation under control by speaking to the workers. Two garment workers were detained during the unrest.
Mominul Islam Bhuiyan said the labour unrest had erupted over the workers' three-point demands, prompting 264 garment factories in Savar and Ashulia to declare a holiday.
Additional police personnel have been deployed across the industrial areas to prevent further incidents, he added.
