The Bangladesh Air Force conducted special helicopter surveillance missions over rivers and coastal areas across the country from October 8 to 29 to protect mother hilsa during the fish's breeding season under the 'Mother Hilsa Conservation Campaign-2026'.

The information was disclosed in a press release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate on Monday (November 2).

According to the release, the aerial surveillance was carried out from Dhaka, Jashore and Chattogram under an initiative of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.

Helicopters operating from Dhaka monitored rivers in Munshiganj, Madaripur, Shariatpur, Barishal and Bhola districts. Missions from Jashore covered rivers in Khulna, Bagerhat and Satkhira, while helicopters from Chattogram conducted surveillance in the Kutubdia region.

During the missions, helicopters spotted fishing vessels in rivers in Madaripur and Shariatpur. The aircrew used high-powered searchlights, known as 'Night Sun', to illuminate the vessels and warn fishermen against illegal fishing.

The ISPR said the powerful searchlights enhanced visibility in darkness, enabling the Air Force to detect and monitor fishing vessels after sunset. Aircrew members also used night vision goggles (NVGs) to conduct surveillance in low-light conditions and identify prohibited fishing activities.

The missions also involved air-to-ground communication to coordinate operations with law enforcement personnel deployed on the ground and officials of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.

Besides the designated surveillance areas, the Air Force has also been conducting low-altitude monitoring flights over coastal regions as part of training missions operated from different air bases across the country, the release added.

The ISPR said the operations were being conducted under the 'In Aid to Civil Power' framework to help conserve the country's natural resources and support national development. The Air Force will continue such initiatives to protect the environment and natural resources, it added.
