Government employee detained with yaba

A government employee of the Department of Public Health Engineering was detained along with another man with yaba and heroin in Meherpur on Sunday (November 1).

The detainees were identified as Ataur Rahman Jhontu, a mechanic working as a side engineer at the department, and Shahadat Hossain. Jhontu is the son of late Harunur Rashid and a resident of Camppara, while Shahadat is from Kolup Para in South Shalika.

Members of Baka BGB Camp detained the two men on Sunday afternoon and recovered 15 yaba pills and one gram of heroin from them. The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members later handed them over to Meherpur Sadar Police Station.

Meanwhile, Jhontu had reportedly remained absent from his workplace for seven consecutive days before his arrest. The department had repeatedly tried to contact him but failed to reach him.

Assistant Upazila Public Health Engineering Sub-Assistant Engineer Wahed Hasan confirmed Jhontu's absence, saying the department would issue him a show-cause notice if he remained absent for 10 days and inform the higher authorities.

The arrest of a government employee after seven days of unauthorised absence has raised questions among locals about the department's administrative response.

Meherpur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Humayun Kabir said BGB handed over the two detainees to police on Sunday. After completing legal procedures, they were sent to jail through the court.
