North Korea has conducted a successful test-fire of strategic cruise missiles in its latest display of weapons capabilities amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, state media reported on Tuesday (November 3).

The test, which took place on Monday (November 2), follows Pyongyang's trial of a cluster bomb warhead a day earlier and comes after three South Korean soldiers were injured in a landmine explosion near the heavily fortified inter-Korean border, intensifying friction with Seoul.

North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Tuesday that the medium-sized cluster warhead fitted to the cruise missile is capable of delivering maximum density impact across five to six hectares, completely destroying target areas.

KCNA noted that the test perfected vertical strike precision by accounting for the geographical characteristics of the target zone and refining terminal tactical maneuvers of the cruise missile.

A North Korean official stated that maintaining robust armed forces capabilities is necessary to safeguard national security and deter potential external threats.

The Director General of the Missile Administration remarked that the powerful weapon system would provide strategic wartime advantages, elevating the state's military readiness to new heights.

Nuclear-armed North Korea has recently executed a series of arms tests, including attack drones, a precision-guided torpedo system, and intermediate-range hypersonic missiles.

While United Nations Security Council sanctions prohibit Pyongyang from conducting ballistic missile launches, cruise missile tests are not banned under the current sanctions regime.
