Students from classes three to ten at public and private schools under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will be able to visit the Bangladesh National Museum and other historical and archaeological sites in Dhaka free of charge from January 1, 2027.
The initiative follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the DSCC and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs at Nagar Bhaban on Tuesday (November 3).
The programme aims to give students first-hand exposure to the country's history, heritage, art, culture and Liberation War beyond their classroom lessons.
DSCC Administrator Bir Muktijoddha Md Abdus Salam said, the initiative would create an opportunity for the younger generation to learn about the country's history and heritage. It also aims to develop patriotic, humane and culturally conscious citizens through the study of history and culture.
He thanked the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Bangladesh National Museum, Ministry of Education and Department of Archaeology for their cooperation.
Cultural Affairs Secretary Yasmin Begum said the initiative would help students develop creativity, aesthetic sensibility and cultural values through practical experiences beyond textbooks. She also stressed the collective responsibility of preserving the country's history and heritage for future generations.
Under the MoU, the DSCC will arrange students' transportation, travel and meals while ensuring their safety and overall coordination.
The Ministry of Cultural Affairs, through its relevant institutions, will organise guided tours, exhibition visits, quizzes, drawing competitions and essay contests as part of the educational programme.
Children from disadvantaged families and students with special needs will receive priority in the selection process.
The MoU will initially remain effective for one year from the date of signing. Its duration and scope may be extended following a review.
DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md Khaybar Rahman, Bangladesh National Museum Director General Tanzim Ibn Wahab and representatives of relevant institutions were present at the signing ceremony.
