A 24-year-old man was stabbed to death allegedly by his girlfriend's father over his relationship with the man's daughter in Osmaninagar upazila of Sylhet on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Saifur Rahman, son of Karam Uddin of Syedpur village under Sadipur Union.
According to police and the victim's family, Saifur had been in a relationship with Zara Begum, 19, daughter of Seju Ahmed of Mostafapur village under Paschim Pailanpur Union in Osmaninagar. The two were distant cousins, with Zara being Saifur's niece.
About four months ago, Saifur eloped with Zara. Her family did not accept the relationship because of their family ties. Following mediation involving members and relatives of both families, Zara was handed over to her father, and both sides were urged to avoid further disputes over the matter.
Since then, the two families had been living separately without further confrontation.
On Monday, around 11:00 PM, Saifur went to the Sherpur toll plaza after receiving a phone call following dinner. He was sitting and chatting at Afaz Variety Store, owned by local resident Lutfor Rahman, when Seju Ahmed allegedly attacked him repeatedly with a sharp knife before fleeing the scene.
Local residents and family members rescued Saifur and rushed him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Saifur's brother-in-law, Saraj Mia, said the relationship between Saifur and Zara had previously led to a dispute between the two families. He alleged that despite the matter being settled through mediation and Zara being returned to her father, Seju Ahmed attacked and killed Saifur in public over the previous enmity.
Osmaninagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Golam Mostafa confirmed the incident, saying legal proceedings were underway and efforts were continuing to arrest the person involved.
