GOPALGANJ, Nov 3: A college in Gopalganj has 14 teachers on its books, but only one student appeared in this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination, and the lone candidate failed.
The unusual result at Durbashur Adarsha Secondary School and College in Muksudpur Upazila has raised questions about the institution's academic activities and management.
The college section began operations in the 2009-10 academic session at Bahugram in the Upazila. However, it has failed to attract a sufficient number of students over the years.
Only one student from the institution appeared in this year's HSC examination. The results, published on October 31, showed that the candidate had failed.
A visit to the institution found no students in the college classrooms, which are being used for secondary school activities.
According to teachers, although 14 teachers, including a principal, are listed in the institution's records, the college section has no teachers of its own. Teachers from the secondary school conduct its classes.
Many students enrolled in the college reportedly attend classes at other institutions. The college authorities, however, declined to provide information about student numbers and examination results from previous years.
Acting Principal Jharna Rani Biswas said they could do little if students did not enrol due to the prevailing circumstances. She also acknowledged that the college section had no teachers.
Assistant Upazila Secondary Education Officer Md Nazrul Islam said they would inform the higher authorities about the situation.
Founder Paritosh Sarker said the college had teachers when it received approval to open the college section. However, many left after the institution failed to secure Monthly Pay Order (MPO) inclusion.
"There is a shortage of both teachers and students. Nothing good is happening in the college section. It would be better if it were closed," he said.
Managing Committee President Parimal Kirtan said he had received his appointment letter only a week earlier and was yet to visit the institution or hold a meeting.
Locals have called for proper supervision and effective academic activities to ensure quality education.
