RAJARHAT, KURIGRAM, Nov 3: None of the 17 candidates from three colleges in Rajarhat Upazila of Kurigram passed this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations, with institutional authorities blaming poor attendance, financial difficulties and a lack of a proper teaching environment.

Although the colleges have buildings, teachers and students on their rolls, regular classroom activities are largely absent, according to the institutions' authorities. In some cases, teachers have not been paid, while many students have moved to Dhaka for work or dropped out after getting married.

Parents, however, blame longstanding teaching shortages and weak supervision for the poor results, saying the failure reflects deeper problems in the institutions rather than merely the performance of the candidates.

According to the 2026 results published by the Dinajpur Education Board on Saturday, all 10 candidates from Singardabrihat College, six from Singardabrihat Multipurpose High School and College, and one from Pangarani Laxmipriya School and College failed.

Established in 1962, Singardabrihat Multipurpose High School and College has failed to produce a single successful candidate in 2022, 2023 and 2025 as well.

Its headteacher Md Ariful Islam Sarker said the institution had been performing poorly for years.

An examinee, wishing not to be named, alleged that irregular classes by teachers had contributed to their failure in English.

At Pangarani Laxmipriya School and College, established in 1939, 25 students were enrolled this year, but only one appeared for the HSC examinations.

Principal Tuhin Patwari said many students were working at garment factories in Dhaka, while several female students had got married.

He also alleged that 20 teachers appointed through the institution's managing committee were reluctant to attend classes as they had not been paid.
All 10 candidates from Singardabrihat College also failed.

Local resident Rabindranath Roy alleged that teachers at the institution had not received salaries for around 25 years. As a result, they had taken up other jobs to support themselves and could not devote enough time to the college.

Rajarhat Upazila Assistant Secondary Education Officer Sajjad Hossain confirmed that all candidates from the three institutions had failed.

He said the authorities would take necessary steps in line with the decisions of the administration.
