Bangladesh observed National Constitution Day on Wednesday (November 4) , marking the 54th anniversary of the historic adoption of the country's supreme legal charter by the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1972.
Serving as the foundational law of the land, the Constitution defines the structure of governance, outlines the powers and responsibilities of state organs, enshrines fundamental citizen rights, and establishes core principles governing state administration.
The drafting process reached a milestone within ten months of independence when the then-Law Minister Dr. Kamal Hossain introduced the draft constitution as a bill during the second session of the Constituent Assembly on October 12, 1972.
Following nearly 73 hours of exhaustive debate, deliberation, and subsequent amendments, the Constituent Assembly officially approved the draft on November 4, 1972, prior to its formal enactment on Victory Day, December 16 of the same year.
The original constitution comprised 11 parts, 153 articles, and 7 schedules, anchoring state administration on four foundational principles: nationalism, socialism, democracy, and secularism.
National Constitution Day is observed annually across the country to commemorate the historic significance of Bangladesh's constitutional journey and democratic foundations.
