Leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its associate bodies brought out a protest rally and held a street meeting in Tongi on Wednesday (November 4), protesting against ongoing instability, vandalism, and sabotage surrounding garment workers' minimum wage demands in the industrial belt.
The program was organized on Wednesday morning at the Station Road area along the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Tongi, drawing a large turnout of party leaders and activists. The rally paraded several key stretches of the highway before concluding with a short street meeting at Station Road.
Addressing the rally as the chief guest, former convener of Gazipur City BNP and former Member of Parliament Alhaj Hasan Uddin Sarkar warned that vested quarters must not be allowed to destabilize the garment sector under the pretext of supporting the 30,000 BDT minimum wage demand.
He urged garment workers to return to their workplaces without giving in to provocations, emphasizing the need to keep factory production running in the interest of the national economy.
Former joint convener of Gazipur City BNP, Rakib Uddin Sarkar Pappu, alleged that as country-rebuilding initiatives are being implemented under the leadership of BNP Chairman Tareq Rahman, allies of ousted Sheikh Hasina are attempting to orchestrate anarchy and destabilize the garment sector.
He asserted that BNP leaders and activists, alongside ordinary workers, would strictly resist such destructive politics on the streets.
Sarkar Shahnur Islam Roni and former Tongi Thana BNP leader Nabin Hossain also spoke at the event.
Speakers urged all stakeholders, including factory owners and workers, to fulfill their legitimate rights while maintaining a peaceful industrial environment to safeguard national production.
