Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has been elected as the first Muslim member of the US Senate after defeating Republican candidate and former congressman Mike Rogers in Michigan's key Senate race, major US news outlets project.

A physician and former public health official, El-Sayed earned the Democratic nomination through the party primary to contest the open seat left by retiring Senator Gary Peters.

His Muslim identity became a prominent focus during the campaign, with Republican leaders, including President Donald Trump, repeatedly referencing his faith. El-Sayed consistently rejected accusations alleging ties to extremism.

By winning in Michigan—a pivotal swing state narrowly won by Trump in the 2024 presidential election—El-Sayed is set to take office when the new Congress convenes in January, establishing a historic precedent as the first Muslim to serve in the upper chamber of the US Congress.

Addressing emotional supporters in a early Wednesday victory speech, El-Sayed directed comments toward Trump and Vice President JD Vance. He pledged to bring the generosity, open-mindedness, grit, and warmth shown by Michigan voters to his service in the Senate.

Turning his attention to opponent Mike Rogers, El-Sayed declared, "Tell them the bad guys lost. We fought together for something bigger and we won. We won! Mike, go enjoy retirement."

He also addressed Vice President JD Vance regarding the constitutional duty of presiding over the swearing-in of new senators in January, remarking on the irony of Vance administering his oath.

Addressing Trump directly, El-Sayed added, "Donald, I know you had a hard time pronouncing my name. So after JD swears me in come January, you can just call me Senator."
