In Lohagara Upazila of Narail, a 52-year-old man named Hasanur Sheikh was allegedly hacked to death by his cousin and members of the cousin's family, following a dispute over the planting of betel nut saplings near their home.
The victim's son, Hasibul Sheikh, 20, was also injured in the incident. The attack took place around 6:00 AM on Wednesday (November 4) in Boyra village, located within the Lakshmipasha Union of the Upazila. The deceased, Hasanur Sheikh, was the son of Abdus Sattar Sheikh, a resident of the same village.
According to the victim's family, Hasanur Sheikh and his relatives had planted betel nut saplings near their home the previous day, Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, when Hasanur’s wife, Sahera Begum, went to water the saplings, Mamun Sheikh and his family members verbally abused her, alleging that the saplings had been planted too close to the boundary of their land.
Upon learning of this, Hasanur Sheikh and his son, Hasibul, went to confront them, leading to a heated situation. The victim's relatives allege that Mamun Sheikh and his family members then attacked the father and son using sharp weapons. Both sustained severe injuries. They were then rushed to the Lohagara Health Complex, where the doctor on duty in the emergency department declared Hasanur Sheikh dead. The accused fled the scene, and as a result, their version of events could not be obtained.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lohagara Police Station, Shariful Islam, stated, "Upon receiving the information, police were dispatched to the scene. Efforts are underway to apprehend those involved. The body of the deceased has been sent to the Narail District Hospital morgue for an autopsy."
