Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman is set to visit Bagerhat on November 5, marking his first visit to the district in 20 years. During the state visit, he is scheduled to pay homage at the shrine of Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali (R).
His upcoming visit has generated enthusiasm among BNP leaders and activists across the district, with preparations and promotional activities underway in different parts of Bagerhat.
Tarique last visited Bagerhat in 2006, when he attended a grassroots representatives' conference of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) at Khan Jahan Ali College ground. At the time, his mother, Khaleda Zia, was the prime minister.
As part of the BNP's efforts to strengthen its grassroots organisation, Tarique visited different parts of the country and took part in organisational programmes. During his Bagerhat visit, he met grassroots JCD leaders and activists.
He subsequently spent an extended period abroad amid political developments. Following the mass uprising in 2024, he returned to Bangladesh in December 2025. His mother and former prime minister Khaleda Zia died a few days after his return.
The BNP secured a single-party majority in the subsequent parliamentary election and formed the government. Since taking office as prime minister, Tarique has been visiting different districts as part of his official and organisational engagements.
Ahead of his Bagerhat visit, district units of the BNP and its affiliated organisations have stepped up preparations. Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal leaders and activists are distributing leaflets, holding rallies and conducting public outreach programmes to welcome him.
Separate teams are also working on behalf of Bagerhat District Council Administrator Barrister Sheikh Md Zaker Hossain to inform local residents about the prime minister's visit.
Former district Jubo Dal general secretary Sujan Molla said they had organised a grassroots representatives' conference at Khan Jahan Ali College ground 21 years ago, when he had the opportunity to meet Tarique Rahman closely.
He said the prime minister's return to Bagerhat after such a long time had created excitement among Jubo Dal leaders and activists.
Barrister Sheikh Md Zaker Hossain said BNP leaders and activists at all levels were working together to make the visit successful. He expressed hope that large numbers of people would gather to welcome the prime minister.
District Chhatra Dal President Atikur Rahman Russell said the organisation was conducting promotional and organisational activities in a united manner and making all-out preparations for the visit.
District Chhatra Dal Organising Secretary Al Mamun also expressed hope that the visit would bring party leaders, activists and members of the public together in Bagerhat city.
