Google has announced an additional $15 billion investment in Malaysia over the next two years to expand its data centre infrastructure, creating more than 37,000 local jobs annually during construction, according to Malay Mail.
Ruth Porat, president and chief investment officer of Alphabet and Google, announced the investment at an AI event in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (November 4). The plan includes expanding its existing data centre campus in Selangor and building new campuses in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.
The construction work in 2027 and 2028 is expected to generate annual earnings of $378 million for local workers. Once operational, the facilities will create more than 9,000 long-term jobs, with average salaries 45 per cent above Malaysia's median wage.
Google is also working with more than 80 Malaysian companies on the projects. In May 2024, it announced an initial $2 billion investment to establish its first data centre and Google Cloud region in the country.
