China is holding discussions with the relevant countries to arrange a possible trilateral meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, with the meeting potentially taking place in China in late November.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning disclosed the development while speaking to reporters on Wednesday (November 4).
"China is maintaining communication with the relevant parties regarding the arrangement of a meeting between the leaders of China, Russia and the United States," she said.
According to China's state-run Global Times, officials from the three countries are coordinating preparations for the proposed meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Summit, scheduled for November 18 and 19 in Shenzhen, southeastern China.
The British newspaper Financial Times earlier reported on the possibility of the meeting.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to host leaders and representatives from the 21 APEC member economies at the summit. Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump are also expected to attend.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that preparations were underway for such a meeting.
A person familiar with the discussions told the Financial Times that Washington and Moscow were pressing Beijing to agree to host the proposed trilateral meeting.
