Govt approves Tk 10,881cr project to build primary school classrooms

The government has approved a Tk 10,881 crore project to construct classrooms as part of efforts to improve infrastructure in primary education.
The project was approved at an Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Wednesday, chaired by Prime Minister and ECNEC Chairperson Tarique Rahman.
Among the other approved projects, five fall under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives. These include a project to ensure safe water supply and sanitation in the Barind region; the first phase of the restoration, re-excavation and bank protection of several canals in Barishal City Corporation; and the Innovation for Climate-Smart Urban Development project.
The committee also approved the Social Infrastructure Development Project (SIDP) and the third revision of the project for the development of important rural infrastructure on a priority basis.
Two separate projects were approved under the Ministry of Home Affairs to enhance the capacity of Bangladesh Police. One involves purchasing specialised vehicles, while the other concerns vehicles for police operational activities.
The meeting also approved a project under the Ministry of Defence to construct Type-B accommodation for officers in the Moinul Road residential area of Dhaka Cantonment.
Under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, a multi-storey residential building will be constructed for government employees at Gabtala Colony in Jigatola.
A project under the Ministry of Science and Technology will establish Institutes of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS) on the campuses of five medical college hospitals across the country.
The Fifth Primary Education Development Programme (PEDP-5) under the Ministry of Education and a project to drill two appraisal-cum-development wells, Titas-32 and Titas-33, at the Titas Gas Field under the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources were also approved.
The committee approved the third revision of a project under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief to construct bridges and culverts up to 15 metres long on rural roads.
At the meeting, ECNEC was also informed about five additional projects costing less than Tk 50 crore each, which had already received approval from the planning minister. These include the modernisation of cardiac treatment services at Zia Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute in Dinajpur and a project to ensure safe internet use among secondary-level students, including children and adolescents.
The meeting was also informed about the first revision of a project to improve traffic infrastructure and road safety in Dhaka North City Corporation; the first revision of a project to expand and modernise the Dhaka Central Drug Addiction Treatment Centre; and a project to procure modern vehicles and equipment to improve waste management in Gazipur City Corporation.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman, Posts, Telecommunications and Science and Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam, Power and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud, Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain, Road Transport and Bridges and Railways Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu, Finance and Planning Adviser Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, and Planning State Minister Md Zunaid Abdur Rahim Saki, among other senior officials, attended the meeting.
