Khamenei warns of ‘broader retaliation’ if US renews attacks

He says those expecting US policy shift 'seriously mistaken'

TEHRAN, Nov 4: Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has warned that any renewed US military assault on his country would trigger a broader response, while praising armed groups allied with Iran across the Middle East.

In a message marking Iran’s National Day of the Fight Against Global Arrogance, Khamenei described Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on US military bases in the region as retaliation for Washington’s military actions, Al Jazeera reported.

“Should such aggressions be repeated, it will take on much broader dimensions,” he warned.

Khamenei also praised what he called the “wise and powerful acts of heroism” by the regional “resistance front,” referring to groups in Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen.

He said the developments demonstrated the limits of US military power and called for the strengthening of Iran’s defence capabilities.
“The only way to achieve absolute deterrence is to continue pursuing the strategy of ‘an ever-stronger Iran’ through comprehensive development,” he said.

War would be much
wider if it resumes

Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei warned on Wednesday that the Middle East war would become even wider if the United States resumed its attacks on the Islamic republic.

"Should such aggressions be repeated, its (the war) scope will become much wider," said Khamenei, who has yet to appear in public since he took office in March, in a written message posted on his official website.

Meanwhile, Iran's supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei said Wednesday that anyone expecting a shift in US policy was "seriously mistaken", hours after midterm elections dealt a blow to President Donald Trump.

"Those who still harbour even the slightest hope that the behaviour of the hegemonic system might change through partisan or factional shifts, or who imagine that making concessions to the United States can dissuade it from hostility towards the Iranian nation, are seriously mistaken," Khamenei said in a written statement published on his website.

Democrats seized control of the US Congress in Tuesday's midterms, reflecting anger over living costs, tariffs and the US war against Iran, which has sent fuel prices soaring.

Khamenei's remarks come with diplomatic efforts underway to avert renewed fighting in the war, which broke out on February 28.
US and Israeli leaders have in recent days threatened to resume attacks against Iran.

"Should such aggressions be repeated, the war's scope will become much wider," said Khamenei, who has yet to appear in public since he took power in March.

Earlier, Iran's chief negotiator in talks with the US, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said Americans had voted against war.
