Industrial unrest flared up in the Ashulia industrial belt on Thursday morning (November 5) as garment workers walked off their jobs following morning attendance punches, forcing closures across more than 100 factories and staging road blockades along the Abdullahpur-Baipail highway.

Protesting workers initially entered their respective factories at around 8:00 AM to register attendance via card punching before exiting to gather outside neighbouring facilities, compelling other workers to join the demonstrations.

Faced with escalating tensions; surrounding factory managements declared general holidays, bringing large numbers of workers onto the streets.

The demonstrators subsequently occupied sections of the Abdullahpur-Baipail highway, causing severe disruptions to traffic movement. Security forces intervened at multiple points, driving protestors off the main thoroughfare and into adjacent side streets.

Workers stated that although the newly constituted wage board announced that pay structures would be finalized in December, the lack of a specific minimum wage figure has generated widespread uncertainty, fuelling their continued agitation.

To prevent sabotage and maintain law and order, security measures have been heavily reinforced across the industrial zone. Additional police units alongside Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have been deployed, with armored police vehicles stationed at critical intersections.

Industrial Police-1 Superintendent of Police Mominul Islam Bhuiyan confirmed that security forces remain on high alert to contain the unrest, noting that at least 70 RMG factories have declared holidays as a precautionary measure.
