Students of Government College of Applied Human Science, formerly Home Economics College, confined Principal Professor Dr Meherunnesa to her office for around 10 hours on Thursday, demanding her resignation over alleged irregularities, arbitrary decisions and harassment.
The protest began at 10:30AM, with students locking the principal's office and chanting slogans. They accused her of cancelling the residential hall seats of two students and demanding Tk 12,600 as a fine for electricity and air-conditioning costs following a farewell programme that continued until 5AM.
Students alleged that the principal refused to listen to their complaints and behaved aggressively when one of them sought a waiver of the fine.
However, Vice-Principal Professor Habiba Yasmin said the two students' hall seats would not be cancelled, describing the initial decision as a warning to maintain discipline. She said the Tk 12,600 bill had resulted from the prolonged use of air conditioners and fans and was to be shared among hostel students.
The vice-principal said the students remained firm on their demand for the principal's resignation despite several attempts by teachers to resolve the dispute. The matter has been reported to the director general of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education and the education secretary.
Contacted by phone, Principal Meherunnesa said she was busy meeting senior education officials and requested that she be contacted later.
