Officials have said that modern technology and multiple layers of safety measures are being used at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant to ensure safety, control radiation and protect the environment.
They also sought the cooperation of religious leaders to raise public awareness about the project and dispel misconceptions among local people.
The remarks were made at a ‘Community Leader Roundtable’ held on Thursday at the Atomic Information Centre in Ishwardi, Pabna, with imams from Pakshi and Sahapur unions participating, says a press release.
The meeting was organised with the support of the Islamic Foundation, Pabna, to raise awareness about the plant's safety measures, environmental protection and contribution to the country's socioeconomic development.
Saikat Ahmed, scientific information officer of the Rooppur project, shared the information with the media.
Dr Md Jahedul Hassan, managing director of the Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL), attended as the chief guest, while Dr Md Kabir Hossain, project director of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Construction Project, chaired the meeting.
Md Aliuzzaman, head of NPCBL's Human Resources Division and chief scientific officer, presented the keynote paper.
The discussion covered nuclear power generation, modern safety systems, radiation monitoring and environmental protection.
Dr Jahedul Hassan said the plant would help meet the country's growing electricity demand and ensure long-term energy security. He stressed the importance of modern technology, multiple safety layers and regular monitoring for safe operation.
Dr Kabir Hossain said imams could play an important role in sharing accurate, science-based information, dispelling misconceptions and raising public awareness because of their influence in local communities.
