Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has expressed disappointment following Cristiano Ronaldo's sudden announcement of his international retirement, describing the five-time Ballon d'Or winner as an icon and a role model for the country.
Ronaldo announced his decision in a social media video on Thursday, saying it was not an easy choice as it involved both his heart and conscience.
Jesus said he had wanted Ronaldo to continue playing for Portugal, adding that he had displayed a large photograph of the forward at the team's auditorium to inspire young players.
"Chris is a world-famous icon and a role model for Portugal and the national team," Jesus said.
He added that Ronaldo would always remain in the hearts of the Portuguese people and serve as an example for the country's football.
Ronaldo made 234 appearances for Portugal, scoring 146 goals. He holds the records for the most international appearances and goals in men's football.
Since making his debut in 2003, he has helped Portugal win Euro 2016 and the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
