Students of Comilla University (CoU) detained two police personnel and a police source suspecting them of being muggers after they failed to present identification cards during a search.

The incident occurred near the Police Lines and Government Women's College area in Comilla city at around 7:30 PM on Thursday (5 November).

The detained individuals were identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Shyamal Saha of Comilla Kotwali Model Police Station, Constable Hanif, and police source Zahid. The students involved were Siam and Orpo, both first-year students of the Statistics Department at Comilla University.

Witnesses stated that the two students were heading to catch the university bus to return to campus after tuition when the three individuals blocked their path and attempted to search them.

The students claimed that the individuals placed hands in their pockets during the search. When asked to produce official identification, the men failed to show ID cards, instead presenting a walkie-talkie and handcuffs. Suspecting them of being impersonators, the students forced all three onto a university bus and transported them to the campus proctor's office.

ASI Shyamal Saha stated that after learning the duo were university students, they let them go and expressed regret. However, as the situation escalated, the students forced them onto the bus.

Following the arrival at campus, a joint meeting was convened at the proctor's office involving the university administration, police officials, faculty members, students, and journalists to hear both sides.

Comilla University Proctor Professor Dr Mohammad Shahadat Hossain stated that police authorities acknowledged the officers' failure to produce ID cards during the search. He noted that while police personnel must carry valid identification on duty, students should have contacted university authorities or law enforcement rather than detaining the personnel.

Assistant Superintendent of Police for Comilla Sadar Dakshin Model Circle Mostayin Billah Ferdous remarked that both parties committed errors during the encounter, emphasizing the need to move away from mob culture and handle such disputes through formal emergency channels like 999.

The dispute was formally resolved following mutual discussions.
