Bangladesh is seeking to utilise Turkey’s expertise to modernise its leather industry and generate electricity from urban and industrial waste, Commerce and Industries Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said during visits to facilities in Istanbul and Şile.
On November 4, the minister visited Istanbul’s waste-to-energy plant, operated by Istac, which can process 3,000 tonnes of waste daily and generate 85 megawatts of electricity. He also visited the Istanbul Leather Organised Industrial Zone (IDOSB) in Tuzla and Cevahir Leather Industry and Trade Company to observe industrial infrastructure, effluent treatment, tanning and leather finishing processes.
On November 5, he visited the Energram Thermal Disposal Facility in Şile, which treats 33,000 tonnes of hazardous industrial waste annually and has a power generation capacity of 5.6 megawatts.
The visits explored cooperation in technology, training, technology transfer and investment partnerships, aiming to improve waste management, strengthen environmental standards, increase value addition and enhance the competitiveness of Bangladesh’s leather industry, according to a Commerce Ministry press release issued on Friday (November 6).
