Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has announced his first national squad since Cristiano Ronaldo's retirement from international football, naming seven new players and selecting five captains based on their international appearances.
The squad was announced on Friday for the upcoming Nations League matches against Denmark and Wales. Alberto Costa and Gustavo Varela have received their first senior national team call-ups, while Rodrigo Mora and Geovany Quenda have been included despite yet to make their senior international debuts.
The seven new additions are Alberto Costa, Antonio Silva, Mateus Fernandes, Carlos Forbs, Geovany Quenda, Rodrigo Mora and Gustavo Varela. Francisco Conceicao misses out due to a three-match UEFA suspension following his red card against Norway, while PSG defender Nuno Mendes is sidelined by injury. Goncalo Inacio has also been dropped for tactical reasons.
Jesus said the five players with the most international appearances would share the captaincy, with no fixed order. The group comprises Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, Ruben Neves and Bruno Fernandes.
Portugal have won all four of their Nations League matches so far and need just one point to secure top spot in their group. They can seal the position before facing Wales if they avoid a defeat by more than one goal against Denmark.
