Prime Minister Tarique Rahman won appreciation for showing respect to the call to prayer (Azan) by pausing his speech for six minutes at a village police rally in the capital on Saturday (November 7).
The incident occurred when the Azan for Zuhr prayers began at a nearby mosque as the Prime Minister was about to address the gathering. Rather than proceeding with his speech, he stood silently at the podium, demonstrating respect for the call to prayer.
He remained standing from 12:44PM to 12:50PM and began his address after the Azan ended. The gesture drew attention at the gathering.
Earlier, Tarique Rahman handed over awards and prize money to eight outstanding village police members, one from each division.
Addressing the rally, attended by around 40,000 village police members, the Prime Minister announced increases in their salaries, honorarium and travel allowances, along with the introduction of mobile phone allowances.
He also announced the recruitment of two additional female village police members in every union and six months of maternity leave for female members.
The Prime Minister further announced plans to name a major road in every union 'Gram Police Road' and said the government would consider reducing the interval for providing bicycles to village police members from five years to three to three-and-a-half years.
