The Election Commission (EC) is planning to introduce National Identity Card (NID) registration for students of government primary schools, with children aged between six and 16 proposed to be brought under the initiative in the initial phase. However, no final decision has been made yet.
EC officials disclosed the information on Saturday (November 7).
According to EC sources, the proposal was discussed at a recent commission meeting. During the meeting, EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed raised the issue of NID registration for minors and proposed launching the initiative through government primary schools for children aged between six and 16.
Following the meeting, Election Commissioner Abul Fazl Md Sanaullah, chairman of the committee on the application of information technology in NID, voter lists and election management, directed the organisation of a workshop on the issue. The NID director general was instructed to prepare recommendations through the workshop and present them to the commission.
The EC currently provides NID services to citizens aged 17 and above. However, various quarters have long been demanding NID cards for younger citizens, prompting the commission to reconsider the registration of minors.
According to the latest voter list, Bangladesh has 12,87,77,643 registered voters, including 6,55,10,665 men, 6,32,65,711 women and 1,267 voters from the third gender.
