Google has successfully run an artificial intelligence model aboard a satellite in orbit, marking a major milestone in its plan to develop space-based AI data centres under Project Suncatcher.
The company confirmed on October 30 that its prototype satellite, launched on October 1, had generated and transmitted its first AI response to Earth using Google's Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) chips and Gemma 4 model.
The project aims to develop networks of solar-powered satellites capable of handling AI computing workloads. Google will next test the chips' resistance to radiation and extreme temperatures, with two interconnected satellites planned for 2027.
However, high launch costs, cooling challenges and technical limitations remain major obstacles to making space-based data centres commercially viable.
