Boro paddy on 3,000 hectare likely to go under water at Tanore

RAJSHAHI, Apr 25: The farmers of Tanore upazila are bracing for a disaster as water level at the Shib river is threatening standing crops due to incessant rainfall for the last several days.
Around 3,000 hectare of land is expected to go under water, if rain continues, farmers said.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) of Tanore, the farmers here have planted early boro saplings on more than 5,000 hectare of land this year. The growth of the plants has also been excellent, according to DEA.  But the Shib River in the upazila burst its banks and water entered the paddy fields submerging crop fields. If the rain continues, the entire paddy crop will go under water very quickly.
Farmers have become helpless and face huge loss, if they cannot harvest their crops, sources said.
Talking to the Daily Obsever, Jakir Hossain Jewel of Kamarga village of the upazila, said he cultivated 25 bighas of land with paddy this year. Meanwhile, some paddy fields were slightly damaged by Kalbaishikhi. But now he faces total ruination due to the overflow of Shib river water. He is unable to hire labourers to harvest the paddy quickly, he added.
