Mango export process starts in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, June 12: The export process of local mangoes has been started whereas the growers are facing huge loss in the selection stage as they have to select mangoes with utmost efforts and care for the best ones.
Meanwhile, the mango supply to the capital has started on Sunday.
A total of 3,500 kgs of good quality mangoes were supplied to the capital to export to foreign country in the first day of export process. Mango growers would not able to export the 70 per cent of mangoes to foreign countries as per the hard rules of the mango selection and ensuring good quality set by the government, alleged the growers. 
According to a BBC report, farmers could not export mangoes to European Union's courtiers this year.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rajshahi, sources said the exported mangoes were sent back to Bangladesh as it failed to send good quality of mangoes in the last two years. Following this incident, the government has set hard rules to select quality mangoes to export to foreign countries.
Around 788 tons of mangoes exported in the fiscal year 2014-15, 288 tons exported in 2015-16 and till a total of 25 tons of mango exported in this year. If we are not careful about the quality of exported mangoes, then it would be very harmful and become a hinder to export others crops to foreign countries, the sources added.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Rajshahi Deb Dulal Dhali said, "Mango exporting to foreign countries bring reputation for our country. But we have to select a good quality for mango export to foreign countries otherwise it can denounce our reputation in the international market.
Besides, the farmers would face huge loss if international markets and countries stop importing our crops. For this reason, we have to ensure quality mango for export to foreign countries. The govt has set up some rules to select stander quality of mango this year, the officer added.
During a recent visit, this correspondent found that Rajib Enterprise of the city supplying mango to the capital and it would be exported to foreign countries by the corporation of Al-Amin whole sellers.  Around 2,000 tons of mango export target has been set up this year, sources said. Besides, businessmen were found packing mangoes to export to foreign countries at Zinnanagar area of the city. Per packet of mango contains two kilograms. 
In this regard, Rajshahi Agro Food Producer Society President Anwar Hossain said that they have started collecting mangoes from 10 mango orchards. It was promised to take from last May 28. But being late in exporting process, some mangoes have started to ripe in those packets.
