Gaibandha-3 constituency polls Sunday

All sorts of necessary preparations have been taken to hold the suspended general election to Gaibandha-3 constituency due to death of one contestant on Sunday.

The voting will start at 8 am and will continue till 4 pm without any break as a public holiday has been declared for polling in the district, deputy commissioner (DC) office sources said, BSS reports.

A total of 4, 11, 854 voters, of them 2, 00,746 male and 2, 11,108 female, will cast their votes through 132 voting centres with 786 booths in the constituency, they said.

All concerned including the members of the law enforcement agencies and other officials have been asked to discharge their duties neutrally raising above all sorts of fear, said deputy commissioner (DC) and returning officer Abdul Matin today.

Some 2,500 police personnel, 20 platoon of RAB, 20 platoon of BGB and 1584 Ansar and VDP members will be deployed to ensure free and fair polls, said superintendent of police (SP) Engineer Abdul Mannan Miah.

Mobile teams and striking forces drawn from RAB and police will also patrol the constituency and will be deployed in important places, he also said.

Mobile courts too will conduct their activities for smooth voting, district election office sources said.

A total of 5 candidates are contesting the 11th parliamentary election to the constituency, said district election officer Mahbubur Rahman.

The presiding officers, assistant presiding officers and polling officers were seen going to their respective voting centers taking election materials like ballot papers, ballot boxes, seals and indelible ink from assistant returning officers’ offices this morning.

The parliamentary election to Gaibandha-3 (Sadullapur-Palashbari) constituency had been postponed due to sudden death of Oikyo Front candidate Dr. TIM Fazley Rabbi Chowdhury on December 19 before the last national polls held on December 30.

Then the Election Commission (EC) rescheduled the polls date to the constituency for January 27.
