While acknowledging the undeniable progress of the country in the past five decades, prominent economists and policymakers feared that the upcoming challenges might derail this "development miracle of Bangladesh."

They were speaking at the launch of a new book, "Fifty Years of Bangladesh: Economy, Politics, Society and Culture," at the office of the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) in Dhaka on Thursday. The book was jointly authored by CPD Chairman Professor Rehman Sobhan and CPD Honorary Fellow Professor Rounaq Jahan.

Professor Rounaq Jahan moderated the program while its Chairman Prof Rehman Sobhan and Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman also delivered their observations.

Speakers said the driving forces of the countrys development will not remain the same forever. Bangladesh is going for transition to LDC in 2026. As a result, it will no longer have the privileges it has enjoyed in world trade. Bangladesh has to go to a new level.

Former Caretaker Government Advisor Dr. Hossain Zillur said other than the economic driving force; some other factors have played an influential role in shaping the countrys development. That is, the revolution of the work forces.

It is the tendency in humans to survive or fight against the odds. Due to this trend, the people of the country are moving forward.

Dr. Hossain Zillur said a big change has taken place in the development world of the country. That is, from an inclusive perspective to an exclusionary perspective. For that reason, he thinks, in the future, the economic agenda will be transformed into a political agenda.

Prof Raonak Jahan, said another such book was launched on Bangladesh in 1996. It was thought then that Bangladesh will go to a better place politically.

There was not so much ambition about the economy then. Now there is frustration with politics. Rather the economy is in good shape. He also said change has its good side as well as its bad side. That is, there is a price to pay for change.

Syed Akhtar Mahmood, former head of private sector affairs of the World Bank Group, connected online said the countrys crop production has increased after independence. Rural communication has improved; Remittance has arrived.

The combined result of these is development. He said a separate arena of entrepreneurship and policy research and dialogue have developed in the country.

Prof Mostafizur Rahman, Honorary Fellow of CPD, said this transition is a reflection of the socio-economic development of the country. Bangladesh became a lower-middle income country in 2015, and will go for transition to an LDC in 2026.

Prof Mustafizur Rahman said, so far development was based on intensive labor but now to the next stage. The country should switch high technology based production and export. But in the last 10 years, exports of high-tech products have remained stuck. Vietnam has progressed a lot in this field.

Prof. M M Akas, Salim Raihan, Rizwanul Hasan, former chief economist at Dhaka World Bank office Zahid Hossain, among others spoke on the occasion.
