The drivers of battery-operated rickshaws suspended their blockade on the city streets for two days till Saturday (November 23) to realise their demands.

They also threatened that they would go for tougher movement if their demands are not met within the given period.

Earlier, on Thursday morning, the auto-rickshaw drivers blocked roads in different areas --Mohakhali, Basila Dhaka Uddyan, Mirpur-10, Mirpur-12, Kazipara, Shewrapara and Mirpur Golchattar and Agargaon --of the capital, protesting a ban on their movement on city streets.

They left the city streets in Mohakhali area around 4PM, said Md Russell, officer-in-charge of Banani police station.

On Tuesday, the High Court ordered halting plying the battery-run rickshaws in Dhaka city within three days.

Following the HC order, the drivers staged demonstrations in Mohakhali, Mirpur, Shewrapara and Kazipara areas, halting vehicular movement.

Jynul Abedin, officer-in-charge of Kamala Railway Police Station, said the train services between Dhaka and others parts of the country remained halted as the agitated driver blocked Mohakhali rail gate area. After they left the place, the train movement resumed at around 4:10PM.

Meanwhile, due to the protest programme, city commuters experienced gridlock in different parts of the capital.
