Martyred Intellectuals Day observed nationwide

People of all walks of life across the country observed the Martyred Intellectuals Day on Saturday, paying rich tributes to the country’s golden sons and daughters who were killed by the Pakistani occupation forces and their local collaborators at the fag end of the Liberation War in 1971 with a pledge to build the country following their ideals.

The country commemorated the brutal killings on the day before Bangladesh achieved the victory on December 16 after a bloody nine-month war against the Pakistan.

To mark the day, different organisations, including political parties, non-political parties, socio-cultural organisations and university autorities, paid rich tributes to the martyred intellectuals this morning by placing wreaths at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial at Mirpur and Rayerbazaar in the capital.
In addition, various programmes were organized in the districts including Chandpur, Gaibandha, Gopalganj, Gazipur, Joypurhat, Khulna, Kishoreganj, Kushtia, Narayanganj, Noakhali, Pirojpur and Rangamati.

CHANDPUR: The district administration observed the Martyred Intellectuals Day in the town with due respect. 

The Day’s programme began with placing wreath on the Martyred Memorial Monument established on the deputy commissioner’s (DC) office premises in the town in the morning. 

Later on, a discussion meeting was held in the conference room of the DC office. Chandpur DC Mohammad Mohsin Uddin attended the meeting as the chief guest while Superintend of Police (SP) Mohammad Abdur Rakib, PPM, was present as the special guest.  

Senior officials of the district administration, freedom fighters (FFs), journalists and local elites were also present at the programme. 

GAIBANDHA: The Martyred Intellectuals Day was observed in the district as elsewhere in the country with due respect and amid paying much tribute to the martyred.

To mark the Day, the district administration, District Police, Zilla Parishad, Gaibandha Government College and various socio-cultural organizations organized different programmes.

In the morning at 10 am, DC Chowdhury Muazzam Ahmed along with senior officials of the district and upazila administrations paid rich tribute at the Shahid Memorial in front of Old DC office of the town here through placing floral wreaths.

The programme was followed by a discussion meeting held at the auditorium of the Zilla Shilpakala Academy in the town here with DC Chowdhury Muazzam Ahmed in the chair.
SP Mosarrof Hossain, Deputy Director of Local Government Department in the district Shariful Islam, Additional DC (ADC) (General) AKM Hedayetul Islam and Principal of Gaibandha Government College Professor Khalilur Rahman, and renowned FFs Abul Wares and Ali AKBAR Mia, among others, also addressed the function. 

The speakers in their speech said that on December 14 in 1971, the illustrious sons of the soil were brutally killed at the fag end of the Liberation War as the Pakistani occupation army with the help of their local collaborators -- Razakar, Al-Badr and Al- Shams -- abducted intellectuals and professionals sensing their imminent defeat.

The intellectuals were taken blindfolded to torture cells in Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Nakhalpara, Rajarbagh and other locations in different parts of the capital, and later, executed en masse at different killing grounds, most notably Rayerbazar and Mirpur to cripple the nation intellectually, they also said.

The Pakistani troops and their Bengali-speaking collaborators killed a number of intelligentsia throughout the nine-month long Liberation War and most of the December 14 victims were picked up from their houses blindfolded and then killed them on December 14 in 1971, they added.

A large number of people including district and upazila level officials, FFs, political leaders, public representatives, teachers, cultural personalities and social workers including journalists took part in the meeting.

GOPALGANJ: On this occasion, different programmes were organized in the district.

Wreaths were placed on the Martyred Memorial Monument established on the bank of Joybangla pond on Sadar Upazila Parishad premises in the town.   

Gopalganj DC Muhammad Qamruzzaman, on behalf of the district administration, and SP Md Mizanur Rahman, on behalf of District Police, paid floral tribute to the martyred of the Liberation War there at around 9 am.

District Muktijoddha Sangsad, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Sadar Upazila administration, Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigoshthi in Gopalganj, and various political parties and socio-cultural organizations also placed wreaths on the monument in phases.

Later on, a discussion meeting was held in the hallroom of Sadar Upazila Parishad with DC Muhammad Qamruzzaman in the chair.

Besides, candles were lit up at the the Martyred Memorial Monument in the evening. 

Earlier, special prayers were offered at every religious institution.

GAZIPUR: The Martyred Intellectuals Day was observed in the district in a befitting manner.

Different programmes were organized in Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agriculture University.

The programmes included hoisting the national flag half mast, wearing black badge, bringing out mourning procession, placing wreaths on Shaheed Minar, holding discussion and arranging special prayer. 

A mourning procession was brought out in the morning, which paraded the main streets of the campus. 

Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the university Professor Dr GKM Mostafizur Rahman led the procession.

After that, wreaths were placed on the Central Shaheed Minar of the university.

Teachers and students paid floral tribute to the heroes of the Liberation War there. 

Later on, a discussion meeting was held with Director of Students Welfare Association Profession Dr Mohammad Saiful Alam in the chair.

Treasurer of the university Professor Dr Md Shafiul Islam Afrad, President of Teachers Association Professor Dr Md Ohiduzzaman, Dean of the Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science Faculty Professor Dr Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Fisheries Faculty Dean Professor Dr Murshida Khan and Register Md Abdullah Mridha, among others, also spoke at the discussion.

A special Munajat was offered after Johr prayers at the Central Jame Mosque in the university.

JOYPURHAT: On the occasion of the Day, the district administration organized different programmes. 

Besides, the district also observed the Joypurhat Freedom Day on Saturday. 

Wreaths were place on Pagla Dewan Mass Graveyard at around 8 am and Koroi-Kadirpur Mass Graveyard in the district at around 10 am.

A discussion meeting was also held in the district marking the Day.

ADC Mahiuddin Jahangir presided over the discussion. 

Joypurhat DC Afroza Akhter Chowdhury, SP Muhammad Abdul Wahab, Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Parishad Sarker Mohammad Raihan, former commander of the District Muktijoddha Sangsad FF Amzad Hossain, Convenor of District BNP Golzar Hossain, its Senior Joint Convenor Masud Rana Pradhan, and President of Jatiya Rabindra Sangeet Sammilan Parishad in Joypurhat Aminul Haque Babul, among others, also spoke at that time.

Meanwhile, District Bam Ganatanrik Jote also organized different programmes. 

KHULNA: Leaders and activists of different political parties, various socio-cultural, government and non-government organizations, and educational institutions placed wreaths on the Gallamary Martyred Memorial here at the early hours.

The Day’s programme began with paying tributes by the FFs of the district to the Gallamary Martyred Memorial at 12 am.

Khulna City Corporation (KCC), BNP, Khulna University (KU), Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) and Khulna Press Club, among others, also paid homage to the great sons of the country.

To mark the Day, the district administration organized a discussion meeting in the conference room of the DC office in the city.

Khulna Divisional Commissioner Md Firoz Sarkar addressed the meeting as the chief guest while DC Mohammad Saiful Islam was in the chair.
SP TM Mossarraf Hossain was present there as the special guest. 

FF Moniruzzaman Mony, and Student Representative of the anti-discrimination student movement in Khulna Saif Newaz, among others, also addressed the meeting.

Khulna City and District Units of BNP, KU, KUET, KCC, Khulna Press Club, Metropolitan Union of Journalists and other political and socio-cultural organizations organized different discussions on the occasion of the Day. 

KISHOREGANJ: To mark the Day, the district administration organized a discussion meeting in the conference room of Kishoreganj Collectorate Office in the town.
Kishoreganj DC Fouzia Khan presided over the meeting. 

SP Mohammad Hasan Chowdhury, Civil Surgeon (CS) Dr Saiful Islam, ADC (General) Rubel Mahmud, FFs AB Siddique and Md Mahabubul Alam, Public Health Engineering Department Executive Officer Mahbubur Rahman, District Primary Education Officer Mojibur Alam, and District Social Welfare Officer Md Kamruzzman Khan, among others, also spoke at the programme.

KUSHTIA: The authorities of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia solemnly observed the Day, paying tribute to the brilliant intellectuals who were murdered systematically during the final days of Bangladesh’s Liberation War.

To mark the Day, the authority raised the national flag at half-mast and raised the black flag fully in front of the administration building. IU VC Professor Dr Nakib Muhammad Nasrullah and Pro-VC Professor Dr M Yeaqub Ali were present there at that time. 

Later on, a mourning procession led by VC Professor Dr Nakib Muhammad Nasrullah was brought out and paraded the main streets on the campus, while Pro-VC Professor Dr M Yeaqub Ali, Treasurer Professor Dr Jahangir Alam and others were also present. After circling the campus, the rally ended at the university’s memorial.

There, the university authority placed floral wreath at the university’s memorial.

IU VC Professor Dr Nakib Muhammad Nasrullah, Pro-VC Professor Dr M Yeaqub Ali and Treasurer Professor Dr Jahangir Alam paid tribute to the heroes of the Liberation War. 
Engineering and Technology Faculty Dean Professor Dr Manjurul Haque, Theology and Islamic Studies Faculty Dean Professor Dr ABM Siddiqur Rahman Asrafi, Professor Dr Nozibul Haque, proctor Professor Dr Shahinuzzaman, Professor Dr Obayrdul Islam were also present at that time.

Later on, various teachers’ organizations, hall provosts, teachers of various departments, Students’ Union, Chhatra Dal, departments, journalists’ organizations and volunteer organizations laid wreaths to pay their respects. 

The observance concluded with a moment of silence and a Munajaat led by an imam of the university’s central mosque for the martyred intellectuals.
Earlier, after the Juma prayer on Friday dua-quran khatam was held to commemorate the martyred intellectuals.

NARAYANGANJ: In this connection, the district administration organized a discussion meeting in the conference room of the DC office in the city in the morning.
Narayanganj DC Md Mahmudul Haque presided over the discussion.

SP Pratyush Kumar Majumdar, ADC (General) Sakib Al Rabbi, and Narayanganj City BNP Convenor Shakhawat Hossain Khan, among others, also spoke at that time.
Besides, special prayers were offered at all the religious institutions of the district on the occasion of the Day.

NOAKHALI: To mark the Day, different programmes were organized at Noakhali Science and Technology University. 

A discussion meeting was held on the Central Shaheed Minar premises of the university after paying tributes to the heroes of the Liberation War there.

VC of the university Professor Dr Muhammad Ismail, Pro-VC Professor Dr Mohammad Rezwanul Haque, Director of the Research Cell Professor Dr Muhammad Shafiqul Islam and Register Mohammad Tamjid Hossain Chowdhury, among others, were also present at the programme.

Besides, a Milad Mahfil was also arranged at the Central Mosque of the university after Johr prayer.

PIROJPUR: To mark the Day, different political parties, academic institutions, professional bodies and socio-cultural organizations offered floral tribute at the Martyred Memorial Monument at the Baleswar River Ghat in the town in the morning.      

Later on, the district administration organized a discussion meeting in the conference room of the DC office in the town.

Pirojpur DC Muhammad Ashraful Alam Khan was present as the chief guest with ADC (General and ICT) Md Selim Hossain presided over the meeting.
SP Khan Muhammad Abu Naser attended the programme as the special guest.

Government officials, teachers and leaders and activists of various political parties, among others, also took part in the programme.    
Meanwhile, BNP and Teachers Association also offered floral tribute on the occasion. 

District BNP Convenor and Central Committee Vice-President of Teachers’ Association Principal Alamgir Hossain led the programme. 

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University-Pirojpur also paid homage to the heroes of the Liberation War.
Science Faculty Dean Professor Dr Akhter Hosen, Register Dr Alok Kumar Saha, and Proctor Dr Md Musa Khan led the programme.
Teachers, students and employees of the university also took part in it.

On the other hand, a discussion meeting was also held in the conference room of Pirojpur Press Club in the town. 

Pirojpur Press Club President SM Rezaul Islam Shamim presided over the meeting conducted by its General Secretary SM Tanvir Ahmed secretary.    
RANGAMATI: In this connection, different programmes were organized in the district.

A discussion meeting was held in the conference room of the DC office in the town at around 10 am.

Rangamati DC Mohammad Habib Ullah presided over the meeting.

ADC (General) Md Ruhul Amin, ADC (Education and ICT) Nasrin Sultana, SP Dr SM Farhad Hossain, CS Dr Nuyen Khisa, District Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Md Abdul Alim, District Education Officer Mridul Kanti Talukder, and Fisheries Officer Adhir Chandra Das, among others, were also present at the programme.
