A faction of the Jagannath University unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra Dal (JCD) has labeled the newly-formed convening committee as a "pocket committee" created by the syndicate and the Chhatra League, declaring it unwelcome on the campus.
On Thursday, for the third consecutive day, the disgruntled leaders of JCD staged a protest in front of the university's main gate, setting tires on fire and holding demonstrations.
The protesting leaders have expressed their belief that the convening committee will not be able to fulfill its intended objectives. They argue that it will tarnish the image of JCD on the campus and create division within the organization.
Rejecting the committee, they have accused the central leadership of appointing their loyalists, sidelining those who have worked tirelessly for the movement. The protesters further claimed that the central leadership was using the committee to marginalize long-time activists, particularly those who had suffered imprisonment and hardship during the rule of fascist prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Abdus Shukur Ayman, the former Literature and Publication Secretary of JnU JCD , criticized the formation of the committee, stating, "After a long hiatus, the convening committee was formed, but it is made up of individuals who have not been part of any struggle. Real activists, who have fought against the immediate-past government's fascism, have been ignored in favour of those who have never been involved in any meaningful movement. This is a 'pocket committee' set up to serve the interests of a select few."
He also pointed out that key activists from the 9th and 11th batches, who have been at the forefront of the movement, were excluded from the committee, while newcomers who joined after December 5th and even non-students were included. Ayman stated that they would not accept this committee, even for a single day.
