Police have recovered the hanging body of a female student from a dormitory in Old Dhakas Purana Paltan area.
The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday at a student residence in Tonuganj Lane, under Sutrapur Police Station. A suicide note was also found at the scene.
The deceased was identified as Sabrina Rahman Shammi, a 17th-batch student from the Department of Sociology at Jagannath University (JnU).
Sutrapur Police Station officer-in-charge Saiful Islam confirmed the incident.
OC Saiful Islam stated, Shammi lived alone in a room at the girls' hostel in the area. Her body was found hanging around 4:30 AM. Her roommates, who lived in adjacent rooms, informed the authorities after discovering her.
The body has been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Speaking on the matter, JnU Proctor Muhammad Tajammul Haque said, After receiving the news, we went to the police station around 6:00 AM. It appears to be a case of suicide possibly linked to a romantic relationship. The boyfriend was reportedly present at the scene later.
The proctor also mentioned, Shammi left a note stating that no one is responsible for her death. As a student of our university, we want a thorough investigation into the incident. We have communicated with the police and they will file a case on behalf of the state.
