ICT advisor Cadman urges India to repatriate Hasina for justice

Barrister Toby Cadman, Special Prosecutor Advisor to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), has expressed hope that India will respond positively to Bangladesh�s request for the repatriation of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to face justice.  

Speaking at a press briefing at the ICT, Cadman stated that Bangladesh�s foreign ministry had rightly issued a diplomatic note to India, seeking Hasina�s extradition. �It is now India�s decision�whether to stand for justice or support impunity. I hope they will choose justice,� he remarked.  

Cadman, an international law expert and co-founder of the London-based Guernica 37 Group, acknowledged that Bangladesh cannot compel India to act on the note verbale. However, he expressed optimism that Hasina would be brought back to face trial under the law.  

The ICT prosecutor advisor emphasized that any legal proceedings against Hasina would be conducted fairly, ensuring she has every opportunity to defend herself. He also underscored the importance of adhering to due process, stating, �There is no room for haste in completing these trial procedures correctly.�  

Cadman reiterated his commitment to professionalism in his role, asserting that past incidents or external influences would not affect the integrity of the judicial process. He urged all parties to trust in the legal framework and allow justice to take its course.  

The diplomatic request for Hasina�s extradition follows her removal from power in August 2024 and her current residence in India. The case has drawn international attention as it tests the balance between diplomatic relations and accountability for alleged actions during her tenure.
