EU to ink Comprehensive Partnership, Cooperation deal with Bangladesh

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has expressed interest in enhancing collaboration with Bangladesh through a possible Comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation Agreement. In a recent letter to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, she reaffirmed the EU's commitment to strengthening ties and supporting Bangladesh in key areas of reform.  

The European Commission President emphasized the importance of a peaceful and inclusive reform process in Bangladesh, underpinned by democratic principles, human rights, and the rule of law. She also highlighted the need for transparent and credible elections, which the EU is ready to support.  

In her letter, Ursula von der Leyen welcomed Bangladesh's commitment to sustainable development, green transitions, anti-corruption measures, and the digitization of financial systems. She assured that the EU is keen to continue its collaboration on these priorities and explore new opportunities for partnership.  

She noted the substantial potential for EU investment under the Global Gateway initiative in sectors such as connectivity, climate adaptation, water resources, railways, health, digitalization, and energy. The EU aims to work with Bangladesh to strengthen institutional capacity and integrate technical assistance to support effective governance and policy development in these areas.  

Recalling her meeting with Professor Yunus during the UN General Assembly in September 2024, Ursula von der Leyen reiterated the EU�s readiness to provide additional support aligned with Bangladesh's ongoing initiatives. She emphasized the EU's focus on fostering secure, reliable networks and maximizing the impact of joint efforts.  

The letter reflects the EU's interest in deepening ties with Bangladesh, signaling a potential new chapter of cooperation and shared goals for sustainable development and governance.
