India urges Bangladesh to honor bilateral agreements

India has expressed its expectation that Bangladesh will honor all mutually agreed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements as the border forces of the two nations prepare for high-level talks later this month in New Delhi.  

The Director General-level talks between India's Border Security Force (BSF) and Bangladesh's Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) are scheduled to take place from February 17 to 20. These discussions aim to address various border-related issues and strengthen bilateral cooperation.  

Randhir Jaiswal, the official spokesperson for India's Ministry of External Affairs, emphasized the importance of adhering to existing agreements. "We expect all mutually agreed MoUs and agreements to be honored. These form the basis for structural engagements between India and Bangladesh, particularly between the border guarding forces of the two countries," he said.  

Jaiswal highlighted that these agreements are crucial for fostering security and trade infrastructure along the shared border, which benefits both nations. "These agreements facilitate the creation of mutually beneficial security and trade infrastructure along the border," he added.  

The upcoming talks come amid recent tensions over border-related issues. Bangladesh has previously called upon India to advise its authorities to refrain from any actions that could escalate tensions along the border.  

India, however, expressed optimism that the two border forces would work collaboratively to implement existing understandings and combat cross-border crimes effectively. "We hope the understandings between the two border forces will be implemented in a cooperative manner to address challenges along the border," Jaiswal stated.  

The BSF-BGB talks are a key platform for resolving disputes, enhancing coordination, and ensuring peace and stability along the 4,096-kilometer-long border shared by the two neighbors. Both sides are expected to discuss a range of issues, including illegal crossings, smuggling, and the construction of border infrastructure.  

India and Bangladesh share a historically close relationship, with numerous agreements and MoUs in place to promote trade, connectivity, and security. The upcoming talks are seen as an opportunity to reinforce these ties and address any outstanding concerns.  

As the two nations prepare for the discussions, India's call for honoring mutual agreements underscores the importance of maintaining trust and cooperation to ensure a peaceful and prosperous border region.
