Rizvi expresses grave concern over future of centrist politics in Bangladesh

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has expressed deep concerns over the future of centrist politics in Bangladesh, as debates intensify over whether local or parliamentary elections should take precedence.
"Those making such statements--or being compelled to--raise serious concerns about the survival of centrist politics," Rizvi said during a prayer gathering organized by BNP at its Nayapaltan office on Friday, February 14, in observance of Shab-e-Barat.
He voiced confidence in Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, describing him as an internationally respected figure who, like BNP leaders, had faced persecution under Sheikh Hasina’s rule. Rizvi expressed hope that under Dr. Yunus’s leadership, the interim government would act justly and support democratic political forces.
"The people of Bangladesh have been denied their rights time and again," Rizvi emphasized. "The citizens alone should decide who governs the country and which politicians come to power. Our struggle is to restore those rights to the people."
He underscored the necessity of a free and fair election, where all political parties could participate without intimidation. "Voters must be able to cast their ballots freely and fearlessly for their preferred candidates. Ensuring this will be a critical duty of the interim government," he added.
Rizvi reaffirmed BNP’s position that parliamentary elections are of national significance, as they determine the nation’s leadership. "The power belongs to the people. Returning it to them will revive democracy and strengthen political institutions," he said.
The BNP leader also cautioned against depoliticization, warning that undermining political forces could create an environment where extremism—whether right-wing or left-wing—takes hold. "The repeated efforts to weaken political parties have shattered democracy and opened the door for fascism," he warned.
Several BNP leaders attended the gathering, including Volunteer Affairs Secretary Mir Sarafat Ali Sapu, Religious Affairs Secretary Rafiqul Islam Jamal, Joint Organizing Secretary (Rangpur Division) Prof. Aminul Islam, and Joint Publicity Secretary Asadul Karim Shaheen.
